Urine cytology

Urine cytology is the examination of cell structures found within urine. The body is made up of millions of cells. Cytology is a pathological specialty that involves the examination of individual cell’s shape and structure to help determine any underlying abnormalities.

This diagnostic urine test is most commonly used to diagnose and screen for bladder, ureteric or renal pelvic cancers. As well as this, other forms of cytology can be used to screen for foetal abnormalities, cervical smear assessments, cancers arising elsewhere in the body and for the assessment of many other conditions.

It is important to note cytology is different to histology. Cytology involves looking at a single cell, while histology focuses on the entire block of tissue.

Urine cytology usually involves the analysis of a urine specimen that the patient has collected in a simple urine specimen pot. However, sometimes urine can be collected from the ureters and kidneys as part of a general anaesthetic procedure involving the telescopic assessment of these organs.

Once you’ve had the test, the cells will be assessed and the results will be examined by a specialist. Our team will make sure that you are talked through the results and what they mean. If you have any questions, we will be more than happy to answer them.

Depending on the result we may need to talk through a treatment plan. We will make sure that you are supported throughout the whole journey and have a full understanding of what is going on.

If you want to arrange a cytology or have recently had one and want to discuss the results, please call us on 07921 874889 or email us on MrAnsonPA@hcahealthcare.co.uk.
